Fundamentals of SEL
SEL can help young people and adults in thriving personally and academically, fostering positive relationships, becoming lifelong learners, and contributing to a more caring and just world.
We define social and emotional learning (SEL) as an essential component of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all individuals, both young and old, gain and utilize the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to cultivate healthy identities, manage emotions, achieve personal and collective goals, empathize with others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and compassionate decisions.
SEL promotes educational equity and excellence by fostering school-family-community partnerships to create learning environments with trusting relationships, rigorous curriculum, and ongoing evaluation. It can address inequity and empower young people and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to just communities.
Consider a young individual in your life. What abilities will they require in order to accomplish their aspirations and goals?
Odds are, you mentioned social and emotional abilities - such as maintaining motivation, communicating effectively, cultivating curiosity, and collaborating with others to address challenges. Social and emotional learning, or SEL, aids in the development of the necessary life skills.
